Thoughts on the Federal Government's Overhaul of Disability Employment Services

As an NDIS provider, I see the potential in the government’s proposed overhaul of Disability Employment Services (DES). This change could provide more opportunities for people with disabilities to gain meaningful employment, which aligns closely with our vision of empowering individuals and promoting independence.

However, it’s important to ensure that the transition doesn’t disrupt the valuable services and support systems currently in place. Any new policies should take into account the unique needs of individuals with varying disabilities, ensuring they receive tailored services to help them thrive in the workplace. Collaboration between DES providers, NDIS services, and employers will be key to achieving long-term success.

What are your thoughts on how the NDIS and DES can work together to improve outcomes for people with disabilities in the workforce?

The current system seems to be mostly disappointing because of a lack of disabled people among the decision makers for these programs.

Most of the decision makers have been abled bodied and independent their whole adult lives. They do not know what it is like to lose independence or to struggle to gain it. Some go as far as to infantalise people with disabilities putting things into place that actually hinder the development of independence. They also limit choices thinking they are helping because they underestimate the decision making abilities of people with disabilities. I have seen this happen in workplaces too.

The jargon does not help either.

I think more people with disabilities need to be voted into positions to be making these decisions.
