Preparing for My First NDIS Planning Meeting

I recently completed my NDIS application and just got notified about my first meeting with a Local Area Coordinator (LAC). I’m really nervous because I’m not sure what to expect and want to be as prepared as possible. Can anyone share their experiences or advice on what this meeting might be like?

I'm especially curious about the kinds of questions they ask, and what information I should have ready. My main diagnoses are ASD level 2, ADHD, and anxiety, if that helps with context.

One of the main things they’ll talk to you about is how your conditions impact your daily life. Be ready to explain how things are for you on your toughest days, not just your average ones.

Definitely write down a list of the supports you think you’ll need, no matter how big or small. Even if you think NDIS won’t fund it, it’s better to ask and see what happens. The meeting is all about making sure you have everything in place to help you reach your goals. Also, don’t be shy to ask for Support Coordination if you think navigating the NDIS system will be tough for you, it can be a huge help!

Just a quick note, make sure you’ve received your official access approval before this meeting. If you haven’t, this first meeting may just be about reviewing your application. You’ll also want to ask the LAC to clarify which conditions are listed in the system for your access approval, as sometimes the letter isn’t clear on that.

Thank you all so much for your advice. You’ve all given me a lot of great pointers and I feel way less nervous now.

Definitely want a support coordinator and also want to be plan managed. I don’t want any heavy responsibility to fall on my shoulders. I just want to be supported an minimize the NDIS headaches.
