I’ve been on NDIS for about a year and I find myself with a significant portion of my funds still available, particularly for a range of assistive products and not just services. Given the broad spectrum of categories available, I’m keen to learn about some unique or perhaps more unconventional items that you’ve successfully included in your plans, be it technology, specialised equipment, or even recreational aids.
Btw, I’m not aiming to misuse the system but to understand how to effectively utilise my resources. For context, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis two years back.
I’ve also been managing MS and found some lesser-known supports that have been life-changing. For instance, I integrated advanced mobility technology into my plan, which included a custom-fitted electric wheelchair and adaptive household gadgets that assist with daily tasks.
Definitely look into holistic supports that address both physical and mental health aspects of MS. For example, adaptive fitness equipment approved under my plan has been crucial for maintaining physical health, and smart home devices help me manage my daily living more independently.
Appreciating the insights! How did you go about getting these items approved? Was there a lot of paperwork involved, or did you need to provide specific medical justifications?
Engaging with an occupational therapist was a game-changer for me. They assessed my needs and helped justify the necessity of each item based on how my MS affects my daily functions. This detailed assessment made it easier to navigate the approval process with NDIS.
You might also want to consult with your plan manager or a knowledgeable NDIS advisor who can clarify what counts as ‘reasonable and necessary’ according to your personal circumstances. They can assist you in making a compelling case for each support or item you need.
That’s great advice, thank you! I’ll definitely look into getting an occupational therapist involved and speak more with my plan manager to ensure everything is lined up correctly. Thanks to everyone for sharing your experiences and advice!
