Interviewing Potential Support Workers: Key Questions to Ask

I’m meeting with a potential support worker this week and I’m gathering some crucial questions to ask them. What are your must ask questions to determine if they’re the right fit?

Welcome to the forum!

I always start with basics like their experience with specific conditions similar to mine, their availability, and if they have reliable transportation. It’s important to know if they can meet the scheduling needs and handle the care tasks required.

Hey Matt

Welcome to the platform. Good to have you here.

Ask about their hobbies and personal interests! It’s great to have a support worker whose personality and interests align with yours, especially if they’re going to be spending a lot of time with you.

Lastly, I’d be asking about their long-term commitments and whether they see themselves in this role for the foreseeable future. It’s beneficial to have a support worker who is looking to build a lasting professional relationship.

Here are a few I always include: What motivated you to become a support worker? Can you provide examples of how you’ve handled difficult situations in the past? Also, make sure they’re comfortable with any pets you have and understand any dietary restrictions that might affect meal preparation.

Ask them how they handle unexpected challenges during work, like sudden changes in the client’s health or emergencies. It’s crucial to know they can stay calm and effective in stressful situations.

Make sure to discuss their cancellation policy and how they handle last-minute changes from both sides. It’s important to know this upfront to avoid any misunderstandings later.

Welcome to the forum Matt! It’s a good idea to inquire about their qualifications and any specific training they’ve had, especially if your care requires specialised knowledge. Also, check if they have current certifications like first aid or CPR.

Thankyou all for your responses, its extremely helpful. I didn’t even think to ask about cancellation policies.

I feel prepared for this interview now.

Thankyou for the warm welcomes. I should have made an intro post first.
