Independent Support Worker from Adelaide SA

Hi there,

My name is Melissa Mathews and I am new to this group.

I was inspired to start my own business as I have not had the best experience working for others. Working for myself I feel I build much more longer lasting, better relationships with my clients which results in better outcomes. I have more control over trying to ensure I am matched up to my clients really well which again results in better outcomes for both myself and my clients. I was bought to this community as made aware of it by a Facebook post.

I just hope to build really good relationships with people so I can grow my business. I find it is competitive out there and it can be hard to find work. I would love to collaborate with others if they feel they could help such as support coordinators and others who may have more knowledge than me on growing my business.

Welcome to the group. It can definitely be a slow start but with good market research, effort in creating opportunities to meet people in the community and good word of mouth it is achievable.

Who are your main target market in the LGAs you are looking for work in?

Hi Lauren,

I don’t really have a main target market in mind. I have clearances and qualifications to work with all age groups however most of my clients I have supported tend to be more mature in age eg in their fifties upwards. I don’t even know if I would specify particular disabilities I would like to support. I suppose I would preferably like to support disabilities I have supported in the past such as autism, ADHD and mental health to name a few. Male or female could be fine.

Welcome to the group. Networking, providing an excellent service to your current clients is key as word of mouth goes a long way. You’ve got this.
Look on eventbrite and facebook events to see what events are happening in your area. Might be a great place to start.

Its not so much about who you are picking to work with. Its about the number of participants in your area and what they are funded for. If you are in an area where they are predominantly needing personal care, but you are advertising community access, you are going to be ignored. If you are in an area predominantly having older participants, going to childrens disability events might not get you enough exposure to people who might hire you.

This is why market research is important.

The data the NDIS provides publicly is amazing and is something that other industries don’t have… and they provide a tool to extrapolate the data easily.
